12 German companies to join the 11th MIF

Two dozen famous German brand companies will join the “German Pavilion” of the German Macau Business Association during the 11th Macau International Trade and Investment Fair (MIF), Tony Un Chong San, chairman of the German Macau Business Association (GMBA), has told the media.

The 11th MIF will be held at the Macau Tower Convention and Entertainment Centre on September 23-26.

Speaking at the Macau Business Support Centre (MBSC) last month, Mr. Un said that German trade officials and businesspeople were paying “more and more” attention to Macau’s annual trade and investment fair due to the “very good response” to their participation in the previous three fairs. “As a result, the GMBA will once again set up a ‘German Pavilion’ at this year’s MIF in the hope of promoting German brands,” Mr. Un said, who is the GMBA’s founding chairman.

Mr. Un also said this year’s participating companies would included starkly different business segments, including cars, tourism, kitchenware, medicines and logistics. “The target market for German businesspeople is not just Macau. In fact, they want to take this chance to reach the market in the Pearl River Delta region, Taiwan, and even some Southeast Asian countries such as Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore,” said Mr. Un, who recently accompanied Macau Trade and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM) President Lee Peng Hong on a fact-finding mission to Germany.

According to Mr. Un, German businesspeople are also paying special attention to the mainland market, and he pointed out that Messe München International (a major organizer of global trade fairs) has sent representatives to the mainland to explore new business opportunities.

Mr. Un underlined the fact that the German National Tourist Office will also take part in this year’s MIF, having produced Chinese-language brochures to promote its tourism industry to the mainlanders visiting Macau.

Germany is one of Macau’s most important trading partners, ranking fourth among Macau’s export markets (after the US, mainland China and Hong Kong). In the first seven months of this year, Macau’s exports to Germany rose 121 per cent year on year to 902 million patacas, accounting for 7.3 per cent of Macau’s total exports (more than Macau’s exports to France and Britain together). Macau’s imports from Germany reached 682 million patacas between January and July of this year, a year-on-year increase of nearly 13 per cent.

Germany is the world’s biggest exporter and the third largest economy after the US and Japan. Mainland China ranks fourth.
