11th MIF “Macau Products Pavilion” set to promote local brands
Antonio Chui Yuk Lum, vice chairman of board of directors of the Industrial Association of Macau (AIM), told the Macau Post Daily in a recent interview that “Macau industries should upgrade their quality and design to make their own brands known worldwide.”
The AIM is one of the co-organizers of the 11th Macau International Trade and Investment Fair (MIF), which will be held at the Macau Tower Convention and Entertainment Centre on September 23-26.
Mr. Chui stressed that Macau-made bands needed to upgrade their quality and enhance their image in order to succeed in overseas markets. “This is the only way to survive in fierce competition,” Mr. Chui said, adding that on the basis of keeping its present manufacturing level, Macau’s industries should “both open up the mainland market or promote their own brands in [North] America and Europe”. Mr. Chui also said, “We should take advantage of the MIF as a platform to present our goods and services to potential business.”
Mr. Chui stressed that the manufacturing sector was receiving “plenty” of support from the government. He also said that more and more local manufacturers were keen to enter the Portuguese-speaking market through business contacts that they hoped to open up during next month’s 11th MIF.
Mr. Chui added that local manufacturers would provide differently priced goods to different Portuguese-speaking countries where the economic situation varied “a lot”, so that both buyers and sellers could benefit.
AIM Vice Chairman Wong Chi Seng pointed out that an increasing number of Portuguese-speaking countries were doing business with Macau, such as East Timor buying motorcycles from overseas markets via Macau.
According to the AIM, the association will set up a “Macau Products Pavilion”, at this year’s MIF, covering some 3,000 square feet and compromising a wide range of goods, such as garment, shoes, medicine, furniture and electronic products, in an effort to promote Macau-made brands for potential buyers and business partners.
Apart from the AIM, the Macau Importers and Exporters Association (AEIM), the Association of Knitting and Spinning Industry of Macau (AITFM), and the Macau Shipper's Association (AFM), will join the “Macau Products Pavilion” promotion effort.
